Scientific name
Alocasia reginula 'Black Velvet'
General description
Alocasia 'Black Velvet' is a highly decorative houseplant prized for its velvety, almost black foliage with contrasting silver veins. Its thick, compact leaves have a soft, elegant texture and are often used as a collector's item.
Origin
Native to Borneo, this variety grows naturally in tropical rainforests under dense canopy cover, in partial shade.
Care
- Light : Bright indirect light, avoid direct sunlight to avoid burning the dark foliage.
- Watering : Keep the substrate slightly moist, allow the surface to dry slightly between waterings; no standing water.
- Humidity : high, humid atmosphere recommended to preserve foliage texture and color.
- Temperature : between 18 and 27°C; avoid cold temperatures and drafts.
- Substrate : very draining mixture, rich in organic matter, with aerated elements such as bark or perlite for good air exchange.
Special advice
- Avoid directly wetting the leaves when watering to preserve the velvety finish.
- Repot every 1-2 years or when the roots fill the pot.
- Fertilize lightly every 2-4 weeks during the growing season with a diluted balanced fertilizer.
- Toxic if swallowed to animals and humans.
