Scientific name
Begonia 'Silver Dollar'
General description
Begonia 'Silver Dollar' is an ornamental Begonia Rex hybrid with broad, round leaves that are often silvery or silvery-gray, sometimes tinged with pink depending on the light. Its textured, shimmering foliage makes it an ideal decorative plant for indoors.
Origin
Horticultural origin resulting from crosses between Begonia of the Rex group, cultivated for its decorative silver foliage.
Care
- Light : Bright indirect light, without direct sunlight to preserve the silver color.
- Watering : Water when the top 1-2 inches of the substrate are dry; avoid keeping the soil constantly soggy.
- Humidity : Moderate to high; air that is too dry can cause brown edges or drying of foliage.
- Temperature : Maintain between approximately 18 and 28°C; do not expose to temperatures below ~15°C.
- Substrate : Rich, well-draining mix; a substrate for ornamental foliage plants or African violets works well.
Special advice
- Do not wet textured sheets directly to avoid mold or staining.
- Repot with care; Begonia 'Silver Dollar' has a sensitive root system.
- Fertilize lightly during the growing season (spring-summer).
- Plant toxic if ingested by animals and humans.
