Scientific name

Ficus microcarpa (commonly known as Ficus Ginseng)

General description

Ficus Ginseng is a remarkable bonsai or houseplant, with a broad, swollen, and often sculpted trunk, reminiscent of ginseng roots. Its oval, glossy, dark green leaves form a dense and balanced canopy. Aesthetically pleasing and visually impressive, it is highly prized for its sculptural character.

Origin

Native to tropical and subtropical regions of Southeast Asia, it has long been cultivated for its characteristic thick roots and suitability for bonsai training.

Care

  • Light : Bright indirect light; ideal near a bright, filtered window; avoid intense direct sunlight to avoid burning the leaves.
  • Watering : Keep the soil slightly moist, water when the surface begins to dry; avoid the soil becoming soggy.
  • Humidity : Medium to high; the plant tolerates drier environments but grows best if there is good ambient humidity.
  • Temperature : between approximately 17 and 27°C; do not expose to temperatures below ~15-16°C.
  • Substrate : rich, draining mixture, with a good proportion of porous material to allow water drainage and good aeration of the roots.

Special advice

  • Prune regularly to maintain the bonsai's shape and encourage dense branching.
  • Repot every 1-2 years in spring, preferably with light root pruning if necessary.
  • Provide good air circulation around the plant to prevent fungal diseases.
  • Avoid sudden changes in location or temperature that cause leaf loss.
  • Toxic if swallowed to animals and humans; handle with care.
