Scientific name

Crassula ovata 'Variegata'

General description

Crassula ovata 'Variegata' or ''Jade Plant Variegata'' is an ornamental succulent prized for its fleshy, two-toned leaves. The leaves are green with cream or white patches, and can turn pink in the sun. It forms a small, branchy shrub with a compact, sculptural shape.

Origin

Species native to South Africa, cultivated as a houseplant in many temperate climates.

Care

  • Light : Very bright indirect light, a few hours of soft sunlight promotes variegated coloring.
  • Watering : Water moderately, allow the surface to dry between waterings; in winter, reduce watering.
  • Humidity : Tolerates normal room humidity; does not require high humidity.
  • Temperature : between 15 and 27°C; avoid temperatures below 10-12°C.
  • Substrate : very well-draining mixture, rich in mineral matter such as perlite or sand, with a little light potting soil.

Special advice

  • Prune lightly if the plant becomes unstable or unbalanced to encourage a more compact shape.
  • Use a pot with good drainage to avoid root rot; preferably a clay pot.
  • Provide bright light to preserve variegation—in an area a little brighter than for single succulents.
  • Toxic if swallowed to animals and humans.
