Scientific name
Euphorbia tithymaloides
General description
Pedilanthus tithymaloides or 'Devil's Backbone' is a succulent plant with zigzagging stems and glossy green alternating foliage. It is very drought tolerant, and its dramatic architectural habit makes it ideal for adding structure and character to an interior or light shelf.
Origin
Native to tropical and subtropical regions of Central and South America, this plant grows in warm environments with dry seasons.
Care
- Light : Bright indirect light, tolerates some mild sun; avoid deep shade which stretches the plant.
- Watering : Water when the top of the substrate is dry; resists drought well; avoid soggy soil.
- Humidity : Tolerates medium to high ambient humidity; very dry air is tolerated if watering is adjusted.
- Temperature : between 18 and 27 °C (≈ 65-80 °F); do not expose to low temperatures or frost.
- Substrate : very well draining; mix containing components for succulents or porous elements to avoid water retention.
Special advice
- Remove low or wilted leaves to promote a clean silhouette and highlight its geometric stems.
- Fertilize lightly in spring-summer if growth seems slowed.
- Use a pot with a drainage hole and avoid pots that are too wide to limit excess humidity.
- Handle with care: irritating sap; keep out of reach of children and animals.
