Scientific name
Hoya parasitica 'Black Margin'
General description
Hoya 'Black Margin' is a climbing or trailing plant, appreciated for its fleshy, glossy leaves with a deep green center, surrounded by a black or very dark edge. The contrast between the dark edge and the rest of the leaf gives it a dramatic and very decorative appearance.
Origin
Native to tropical regions of Southeast Asia, cultivated for its ornamental characteristics, it is popular with lovers of hoyas with contrasting foliage.
Care
- Light : Bright indirect light; avoid strong direct sun which can burn leaf edges.
- Watering : Water when the substrate is completely dry over the first few centimetres; avoid keeping the soil constantly moist.
- Humidity : Moderate to high humidity is preferred to keep foliage healthy and shiny.
- Temperature : Ideally between approximately 15 and 29°C; no exposure to cold temperatures or cold drafts.
- Substrate : very draining substrate with aerated elements such as perlite or bark, suitable for epiphytic plants.
Special advice
- Prune lightly to encourage a dense shape and prevent the plant from becoming spindly.
- Fertilize lightly in spring/summer with a diluted balanced fertilizer to stimulate new leaf growth.
- Place in a hanging pot or on a trellis support to show off the black-margined foliage.
- Toxic if swallowed to humans and animals.
