Scientific name

Hoya carnosa 'Compacta'

General description

Hoya carnosa 'Compacta', nicknamed Hoya Rope or Hoya Hindu Rope, is a trailing plant with thick stems covered with fleshy green leaves, curved and coiled like twisted ropes. It produces magnificent waxy, pink star-shaped flowers with a red center, which are very fragrant.

Origin

Native to South and Southeast Asia, particularly India, China, and Indonesia, where it grows as an epiphytic plant clinging to trees.

Care

  • Light : Bright indirect light, tolerates mild morning sun. Too little light reduces flowering.
  • Watering : Water moderately; allow the substrate surface to dry between waterings. Reduce in winter.
  • Humidity : Medium to high (50–70%). Fleshy leaves tolerate normal ambient humidity.
  • Temperature : ideal between 18 and 27°C; avoid below 15°C.
  • Substrate : light, well-draining mix, such as orchids or succulents (potting soil, perlite, bark).

Special advice

  • Prefers to stay tight in its pot, which stimulates flowering.
  • Fertilize every 4 weeks in spring and summer with a high potassium fertilizer to promote flowers.
  • Do not remove the flower stalks after flowering, as the flowers grow back on them every year.
  • Non-toxic to humans and animals.
