Scientific name
Hoya carnosa 'Krimson Queen'
General description
Hoya 'Krimson Queen' is an ornamental variety with remarkable variegated foliage: dark green leaves with acrid cream to pinkish margins, often edged or marbled depending on the specimen. The contrast between the dark center and the light margins gives it a refined and dramatic charm.
Origin
Horticultural selection from Hoya carnosa , a species native to Southeast Asia, highly prized for its variegated varieties.
Care
- Light : Bright indirect light; light variegation is best kept in good light, but avoid strong direct sun.
- Watering : Allow the substrate to dry slightly between waterings; do not leave the soil soggy.
- Humidity : Medium to high; air that is too dry can darken margins or cause light edges to brown.
- Temperature : between ~18 and 27°C; avoid prolonged cold temperatures or thermal shock.
- Substrate : very aerated and draining substrate, suitable for epiphytic or semi-epiphytic plants, with bark, perlite or specialized substrate.
Special advice
- Use a hanging pot or trellis support to showcase the variegated stems.
- Fertilize lightly during the growing season (spring/summer) every 4 to 6 weeks with diluted balanced fertilizer.
- Gently clean the light margins to preserve the distinction between light and dark areas of the foliage.
- Avoid frequent repotting; this variety prefers to be slightly cramped.
- Plant toxic if ingested by animals and humans.
