Scientific name
Hoya krohniana 'Silver'
General description
Hoya krohniana 'Silver' is a climbing or trailing houseplant with small, stiff, heart-shaped leaves with shiny silver spots on a grayish-green background. The silver/green contrast creates an elegant metallic effect. It sometimes produces umbels of small, highly fragrant white flowers that add a subtle charm.
Origin
Native to Southeast Asia, grown as an ornamental plant for collections of fine, variegated hoyas.
Care
- Light : Bright indirect light; tolerates little direct sunlight in the morning or evening, avoid intense exposure.
- Watering : Allow the substrate to dry between waterings; water moderately, more often during the growing season, less often if the air is humid.
- Humidity : Medium to high; more humid ambient air improves foliage appearance and reduces stress.
- Temperature : between ~18 and 27°C; do not expose to low temperatures (<15-16°C).
- Substrate : very draining mixture with aerated material (like substrate for epiphytes or hoyas), elements like perlite or bark to avoid water retention.
Special advice
- Allow good drainage to prevent rot, especially with a pot with holes or raised substrate.
- Fertilize lightly every 4 to 6 weeks during the growing season with a diluted balanced fertilizer.
- Wipe the foliage if dust accumulates to preserve the silver shine.
- Be careful not to overwater — this hoya does not like overly wet soil.
- Toxic if swallowed to animals and humans.
