Scientific name
Kalanchoe tomentosa 'Chocolate Soldier'
General description
Chocolate Soldier is a succulent variety with oval, gray-green leaves covered in cottony down, edged in darker chocolate-brown. When properly exposed, the chocolate margin stands out strongly, creating an elegant contrast with the lighter leaf body.
Origin
Native to Madagascar, like other Kalanchoe tomentosa cultivars, grown as a houseplant for its decorative foliage.
Care
- Light : Bright indirect light to strong filtered light; some soft sunlight accentuates the chocolate edge, but avoid intense direct afternoon sun.
- Watering : Water only when the substrate is completely dry; avoid frequent watering; in winter, space out watering.
- Humidity : Prefers low to moderate humidity; dry air suits it well.
- Temperature : Maintain temperatures between ~15-30°C; protect from frost and very cold temperatures.
- Substrate : very well-draining mix suitable for succulents (light potting soil, sand or inorganic materials, perlite), with a well-draining pot.
Special advice
- Keep foliage clean: Avoid wetting hairy leaves to prevent mold or rot.
- Fertilize lightly in spring-summer once a month with a fertilizer suitable for succulents.
- Repot only when necessary (compacted substrate, visible roots) to avoid stressing the plant.
- Plant toxic if swallowed; keep out of reach of animals and children.
