Scientific name
Senecio radicans
General description
Senecio radicans, commonly known as String of Bananas, is a hanging succulent plant with drooping stems covered in fleshy, elongated banana-shaped leaves. The foliage is light green and can turn slightly blue depending on the light. Adds a light, graphic touch when hanging.
Origin
Native to the coastal regions of South Africa, with a Mediterranean climate, adapted to dry and bright environments.
Care
- Light : Bright indirect light, tolerates soft direct light in the morning or late afternoon.
- Watering : Water when the substrate is completely dry; drought tolerant; avoid frequent watering.
- Humidity : Prefers moderate to low humidity; tolerates dry air well.
- Temperature : between approximately 15 and 30°C; avoid prolonged low temperatures.
- Substrate : very draining cactus/succulent type substrate with coarse sand, perlite, mineral elements to evacuate water.
Special advice
- Use a hanging pot to highlight the cascade of leaves.
- Provide bright light to preserve color and prevent foliage from becoming stretched.
- Fertilize lightly during the growing season, once a month or less, with a succulent-friendly fertilizer.
- Handle with care as leaves can be fragile.
- Plant toxic if ingested by animals and humans.
