Scientific name
Syngonium podophyllum
General description
Syngonium podophyllum is a tropical vine popular for its arrow-shaped or heart-shaped leaves that vary with age: when young, they are simple, later they can become lobed. The leaves can be green or variegated depending on the variety. It is a vigorous plant, easy to integrate indoors for its aesthetic qualities and decorative foliage.
Origin
Native to Latin America, Central and South America, often found in humid forests where it climbs or spreads on the ground in shady undergrowth.
Care
- Light : Bright indirect light, tolerates medium light. Avoid direct sunlight which can burn or bleach the leaves.
- Watering : Keep the soil slightly moist, water regularly in spring and summer, reduce the frequency in winter. Never leave the pot soggy.
- Humidity : High to moderate, likes a humid atmosphere to prevent leaves from turning brown or drying out.
- Temperature : between ~16 and 27°C; do not expose to cold temperatures or drafts.
- Substrate : well-draining mix, rich in organic matter, light soil, with perlite or bark for aeration.
Special advice
- Prune to maintain a compact shape or encourage branching.
- Use a support (tutor, moss) if you want it to climb.
- Fertilize in spring and summer every 3-4 weeks with a balanced fertilizer.
- Plant toxic if ingested by humans and animals.
