Scientific name

Tradescantia albiflora 'Nanouk'

General description

Tradescantia 'Nanouk' is a highly decorative houseplant, prized for its variegated foliage: shades of pink, cream, soft green and slightly purple undersides. It can be grown in a hanging pot or standing, and forms numerous stems that droop or spread out, giving a lush and colorful effect.

Origin

A horticultural hybrid of the Commelinaceae family, cultivated for its shimmering colors. Although its parents originated in the tropical regions of Central and South America, "Nanouk" is the result of modern cultivated selections.

Care

  • Light : Bright indirect light; essential for maintaining strong pink and cream hues. Avoid strong direct sunlight, which could burn the foliage.
  • Watering : Water when the top layer of the substrate is dry to the touch; never leave the pot in standing water. Adjust watering according to the heat and ambient air.
  • Humidity : Prefers medium to high humidity; misting or pebble tray recommended if air is very dry.
  • Temperature : between approximately 18 and 27°C; avoid lower temperatures or thermal shock.
  • Substrate : light soil, rich in organic matter, very well draining; mix potting soil with perlite or porous elements to facilitate drainage.

Special advice

  • Prune the stems to prevent the plant from becoming too sparse and to encourage denser growth.
  • Remove wilted or damaged leaves to maintain the beauty and health of the foliage.
  • Place in a hanging pot or on a shelf to enhance the hanging stems.
  • Plant toxic if swallowed, keep out of reach of children and animals.
