Scientific name
Zamioculcas zamiifolia 'Nova Star'
General description
Zamioculcas 'Nova Star' is a compact variety of the ZZ plant, recognizable by its deep green, almost black leaves. The soft and bright contrast of its leaflets makes it a particularly sought-after decorative houseplant.
Origin
Horticultural variant of Zamioculcas zamiifolia, a species native to East Africa, selected for its variegated patterns.
Care
- Light : Medium to bright indirect light; tolerates low light but variegation is more visible in moderate light.
- Watering : Water when the substrate is completely dry; the ZZ is very drought tolerant.
- Humidity : Tolerates normal ambient humidity.
- Temperature : between ~15 and 27°C; avoid prolonged cold.
- Substrate : light, free-draining mix; well aerated, suitable for succulents/rhizomes.
Special advice
- Do not overwater — overwatering is the main cause of problems.
- Rotate the plant so that the variegation is evenly visible.
- Repot only every 2-3 years or when the rhizomes are cramped.
- Toxic if swallowed to humans and animals.
