Scientific name
Aloe variegata
General description
Aloe variegata , also called “Tiger Aloe” or “Partridge Breast Aloe,” is a compact succulent with triangular, thick, green leaves marbled with silvery or whitish bands. The leaves form a dense rosette with an architectural habit, perfect for succulent collectors.
Origin
Native to South Africa and Namibia, this species grows in semi-arid conditions on well-drained rock or sandy soils.
Care
- Light : Bright light to full mild sun; tolerates full sun if acclimated gradually.
- Watering : Water moderately; allow the substrate to dry thoroughly between waterings. In winter, reduce watering.
- Humidity : Prefers a low humidity environment; air that is too humid can promote rot.
- Temperature : Tolerates high temperatures, but does not tolerate frost; keep above ~5-7°C.
- Substrate : very well-draining soil suitable for succulents, mixed with coarse sand, perlite or stones.
Special advice
- Use a pot with efficient drainage to avoid stagnant water which causes rot.
- Do not repot frequently; this species prefers to be a little cramped.
- Fertilize lightly during the growing season (spring/summer) with a fertilizer suitable for succulents.
- Clean dust off the leaves to maintain the beautiful marbling and shine.
- Plant toxic if swallowed - keep out of reach of children and animals.
