Scientific name
Begonia masoniana var.
General description
Begonia masoniana var. or 'Iron Cross' is an ornamental rhizomatous plant known for its large, oval, embossed, green leaves with a prominent dark cross-shaped spot in the center. The contrast between the rough texture, the slightly red hairs on the leaves, and the dark central pattern creates a very visual effect. It sometimes blooms with upright inflorescences of white or slightly pink flowers, but it is still mainly cultivated for its foliage.
Origin
Native to southern China and northern Vietnam.
Care
- Light : Bright indirect light; avoid direct sun which could burn the leaves or fade the central dark pattern.
- Watering : Water when the top few centimeters of the substrate are dry; keep the soil moist but never soggy to prevent rot.
- Humidity : High; likes a humid environment. Use pebble trays, controlled misting, or clusters of plants to increase humidity.
- Temperature : between approximately 18 and 25-27°C; avoid temperatures below approximately 13-15°C or exposure to cold drafts.
- Substrate : Mixture rich in organic matter, very well-draining, light. Add elements for aeration (bark, perlite, etc.).
Special advice
- Remove dead or damaged leaves as soon as they appear to maintain visual appearance and prevent disease.
- Wipe the leaves from time to time to remove dust so as not to clog the bristles and preserve the texture.
- Fertilize diluted every 2 to 4 weeks during the growing season.
- Repot when the plant outgrows the pot or the substrate becomes compacted, but avoid repotting frequently.
- Toxic if swallowed by animals and humans.
