Scientific name
Echeveria nodulosa 'Benitsukasa'
General description
Echeveria nodulosa 'Benitsukasa' is a highly prized ornamental succulent known for its compact rosettes of thick, apple-green leaves with pinkish-red or purple margins and spots, depending on exposure. Some individuals have small growths (wattles) on the leaves that add interesting texture. In favorable seasons, it blooms with pinkish-red bell-shaped flowers erect on stalks.
Origin
Cultivar derived from Echeveria nodulosa , a species native to Mexico (Oaxaca / Puebla); the 'Benitsukasa' form is a Japanese horticultural selection that highlights its contrasting red hues.
Care
- Light : Bright to full morning sunlight; strong light intensifies red colors. Avoid the blazing midday sun.
- Watering : “soak and dry” method: water deeply then allow the substrate to dry completely before watering again. In winter, reduce watering significantly.
- Humidity : Prefers dry to moderate air; prolonged high humidity can cause rot problems.
- Temperature : Tolerates warm temperatures; do not expose to frost; keep above ~5-10°C to avoid damage.
- Substrate : very well-draining soil for succulents, mixed with lots of mineral components (perlite, coarse sand, gravel) and pot with drainage hole.
Special advice
- Keep the rosette centered and clean: remove dead or low leaves to avoid stagnant moisture.
- Allow good air circulation around the plant to prevent fungus or mold.
- In summer, a few days outside in a sheltered area can promote coloring if the climate permits.
- Non-toxic plant (no major known dangers to humans or animals).
