Description

Scientific name

Episcia cupreata 'Pink Brocade'

General description

A small, creeping plant from the Gesneriaceae family, with velvety, two-tone foliage of pink, green, and cream, often accompanied by small orange tubular flowers. Perfect in a terrarium or hanging basket thanks to its decorative runners.

Origin

Tropical undergrowth of Central and South America, where it spreads on the ground in humid shade.

Care

  • Light : bright indirect; avoid direct sun which burns the foliage.
  • Watering : Keep the substrate slightly moist; water when 1–2 cm of the surface is dry; avoid standing water.
  • Humidity : high (ideal in terrariums); avoid directly wetting the velvety leaves.
  • Temperature : 18–27°C; avoid <16°C and drafts.
  • Substrate : light and airy African violet type mix (peat/coconut + perlite/vermiculite).

Special advice

  • Pinch/prune the runners to thicken the plant or make cuttings easier.
  • Fertilize lightly every 2–4 weeks in spring/summer.
  • A wide, shallow pot encourages the rooting of runners.
  • Use room temperature water; water from below if possible.
