General description
Senecio rowleyanus , nicknamed "String of Pearls" or "pearl necklace", is a creeping or hanging succulent plant. Its long, thin stems are adorned with small, green, spherical leaves that resemble pearls. Original and graphic, it is ideal for hanging.
Origin
Native to South Africa, where it grows on the ground or clings to rocks in dry, sunny environments.
Care
- Light : Bright, indirect light; tolerates some mild direct sunlight, especially in the morning.
- Watering : Water moderately; allow most of the substrate to dry out between waterings. Very sensitive to overwatering.
- Humidity : Prefers dry to moderate air; no need for high humidity.
- Temperature : ideal between 18 and 27°C; avoid below 10°C.
- Substrate : very draining mixture such as cacti or succulents (sandy soil, perlite, pumice stone).
Special advice
- Discreet but fragrant flowering in summer, small tubular white flowers with a cinnamon scent.
- Ideal for hanging or in a raised pot to show off its drooping stems.
- Watering too frequently leads to rot; it is better to forget to water than to water too much.
- Toxic if swallowed to pets and humans.
